Privacy
Street Tally is run by Martijn van Exel. This page says what we keep when you take part in a campaign, for how long, and how to delete it.
Your location
The app uses your location on your phone to show the nearest places to check. If you report that a place has moved, the spot you pick is saved so the organizer can fix the map. If you tap “I'm standing at it”, your phone's location at that moment is saved as the place's new spot. That's the only time your location leaves your phone.
If you take part without an account
We keep a random ID for your phone, your answers, and which places you answered. Your answers are kept for 30 days after your last one. If you don't put them on the map by then, we remove them. They still count in the campaign's totals, which don't include who answered.
Server logs
Our app server doesn't record your IP address in its logs or its database. When you sign up, your IP address is held in memory for up to an hour to limit sign-up abuse, and then it's gone. It's never written to disk. The server logs record which pages and map areas the app asked for, without your IP address or your name, and they're cleared each time we update the server.
Your email address
Giving an email is optional. We use it only to send the link to put your answers on the map, two reminders, and a last note when your answers are added or removed. It's stored encrypted and deleted after that last note. Our emails don't track whether you open them.
When your answers go on the map
Your answers become public edits on OpenStreetMap under your own OpenStreetMap username, tagged with the campaign's hashtag. Anyone can see them. The OpenStreetMap Foundation's privacy policy covers your OpenStreetMap account and edits.
Delete your data
In the app, go to Settings, then Account, then Delete my data. Or use the Delete my data link in any email from us. This removes your saved answers, your email address and your phone's ID. Edits already on OpenStreetMap stay there, because they're part of the map.
